Jay Hughes BSc
Lecturer in Paramedic Science
Summary
I am a Lecturer in Paramedic Science, contributing to the teaching and development of future healthcare professionals. My primary teaching responsibilities include pharmacology and Collaboration for Individual and Community Wellbeing, a multidisciplinary module that promotes teamwork and integrated care across the School of Health and Social Care at Sheffield Hallam University.
My areas of interest include pharmacology, pre-hospital advanced life support and simulated practice. I am particularly passionate about creating realistic and engaging simulation-based learning experiences that prepare students for the dynamic and challenging environments of pre-hospital and emergency care. Simulation allows learners to develop clinical skills, critical thinking and decision-making in a safe, supportive environment, enhancing their confidence and readiness for practice.
Alongside my teaching duties, I am also co-placement lead for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, ensuring students gain valuable practical experience.
About
I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2021 with a BSc in Paramedic Science and began my career with Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) as an Ambulance Paramedic and Practice Educator. In this role, I gained experience delivering high-quality pre-hospital care while mentoring and supporting the development of student paramedics. During my time at YAS, I regularly returned to Sheffield Hallam University to assist with the delivery of practical modules, which sparked my passion for teaching and provided me with valuable teaching experience.
I now work full-time at Sheffield Hallam University as a Lecturer in Paramedic Science, where I teach across core areas, including pharmacology, advanced life support, trauma life support and Collaboration for Individual and Community Wellbeing. This multidisciplinary module, delivered across the School of Health and Social Care, emphasises the importance of interprofessional collaboration in promoting patient-centred care and improving community health outcomes.
My professional interests lie in pharmacology, pre-hospital advance life support and simulated practice. I am particularly passionate about using simulation-based education to provide students with realistic, hands-on learning experiences that build their clinical competence, critical thinking and confidence in delivering care under pressure.
In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am actively involved in student support as an academic advisor, helping to guide students through their academic and professional journeys. I also serve as Co-Placement Lead for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, ensuring students benefit from high-quality placement opportunities that bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice.
Alongside my full-time academic role, I remain committed to clinical practice by working for Yorkshire Ambulance Service in a bank capacity. I also volunteer with St John Ambulance as an Event Paramedic, Youth Leader and Volunteer Trainer.
Through my combined experience as a clinician, educator and mentor, I aim to inspire and prepare the next generation of paramedics. My focus is on equipping students with the knowledge, skills and collaborative mindset required to thrive in the dynamic and evolving field of pre-hospital and emergency and urgent care.
