I am a visual artist specialising in drawing and painting with over 25 years of experience of working in the creative public and educational sector using both new and traditional media. My principle Interests are drawing and painting both traditionally and digitally and in developing teaching that utilises and blends traditional core skills with new and emerging methods. I continue to paint and draw in a variety of media for my own practise.
As a freelance arts and media professional I also ran my own digital arts company, Radius Design working with a wide range of media including web design, photography, animation and film I have worked for many clients including; governmental bodies The BBC, The BFI, Local Councils, and The Heritage Lottery fund.
I have worked with a people of differing abilities ages and backgrounds in mainstream, further and higher education. I worked in schools as a Creative ITC Specialist. During this time I trained in and utilised creativity methods such as ‘Edward De Bono’s- 6 thinking hats’ and Dorothy Heathcote’s ‘Mantle of the Expert’.
The experience gained is useful for my research interests which are mainly concerned with exploring the teaching of creativity.
I am currently developing a research proposal that aims to develop ways of effectively using creative tools in teaching. This is looking at the methods of teaching and barriers to learning and using evidence that currently exists to develop teaching tools that have practical application in the classroom.
I have been involved in the campaign for drawing Big Draw project for a number of years through the University This has involved taking animation students into schools to draw with 8 year olds and creating postcards of face construction methods. I am in the process of collaborating with Arts Council funded literacy project Grimm and Co for 2016.
Other projects are a poster based project about visual osmosis and the establishment of a student sketching group through organising trips and a student-administrated Facebook group.
I have recently become involved with the THINKING THROUGH DRAWING: International Drawing & Cognition Research and Education Group as a member of a Drawing Circle.
I keep up to date with current developments in artistic techniques and teaching developments in the creation of artwork for the Game Animation and Film Industries through online group memberships and print subscriptions.
