Nicola Woodroofe

Professor Emerita Nicola Woodroofe BSc, PhD, SFHEA

Professor Emerita

Summary

I was appointed as a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University in 1994, after completing my BSc and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of London and 15 years as a postdoctoral researcher. I was promoted to Professor in 2005 based on my international profile in the field of neuroimmunology and specifically multiple sclerosis. I retired in 2020 and I am now an emeritus professor.

About

After appointment as a senior lecturer , I taught cell biology, immunology, pathological sciences and neuroscience at undergraduate and masters levels. I have supervised over 25 research students to complete their doctoral degrees. I have collaborated with consultant neurologists at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for many years specifically in research on multiple sclerosis and gluten ataxia. I have published around 100 papers and abstracts and presented my research work at international conferences.

I continue to act as a referee for a number of journals and grant awarding bodies.

Postgraduate supervision

I have supervised PhD students both at Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield, including clinicians, with most of these focussed on multiple sclerosis research. I have also supervised professional doctorate students working in NHS pathology laboratories as well as at the NHS Blood Transfusion Service laboratories.

Media

Nicola was the Head of the University's Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre until the end of December 2018 and has worked within biomedical research for over 30 years, with particular focus on multiple sclerosis (MS). Nicola's main interest is in the study of post-mortem brain tissue using pathological and immunological techniques to get an understanding of the immune mechanisms within the brain of an MS patient. Nicola chairs the Women Professors' Group which seeks to support and inspire female academics to advance their careers to professorial level and she is also a champion of women in science.
