Sarah Nelson MSc, BSc (Hons), BA (Hons)
Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography
Summary
I joined Sheffield Hallam as a full-time Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography in January 2024. Prior to this, I worked clinically as a Senior Radiographer in the NHS for 14 years, specialising in MRI and CT scanning. My main areas of interest are neuroimaging, oncology, forensics and paediatrics, particularly improving the experiences of neurodivergent paediatric patients in Radiology. I am incredibly proud to be a Diagnostic Radiographer and have always worked hard to promote our profession, in both clinical and academic environments.
About
In my current role I am involved in teaching and curriculum development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level across our Diagnostic Radiography provision. I also act as Link Lecturer for one of our clinical placement sites where I support our clinical staff in providing high-quality clinical education and support to our students. In all my clinical roles I have worked with and mentored students, enjoying watching their skills and confidence grow and develop over the course of their training.
I qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 2010 and worked for 2 years as a General Radiographer, before moving into cross-sectional imaging as a Senior Radiographer in 2012. I have worked in CT and MRI across a variety of NHS Trusts of different sizes and specialities in the North-West of England and in Yorkshire, allowing me to build up a broad level of clinical expertise and experience which I bring to my academic role. I remain an HCPC-registered Radiographer and still work clinically to keep my knowledge and skills current.
I completed my MSc at Sheffield Hallam in 2022 with a research project focused on the experiences of paediatric neurodivergent patients in the Radiology department. The results of the research led to the introduction of a number of initiatives in my current radiology department which provide tangible improvements for this patient group. Our MRI Sensory Saturday initiative, conceived of and spearheaded by myself and a colleague, led to us both being nominated and shortlisted to the final 5 for the Public Health Champion prize at the prestigious Chief Allied Health Professions Officer Awards in 2023. I still work clinically on this initiative and it remains the most fulfilling and rewarding clinical work of my career. I presented the results of my MSc research project at UKIO in 2024.
My main areas of interest are neuroimaging, oncology, forensics and paediatrics, and I am a member of the International Association of Forensic Radiographers and the Society of Radiographers. I am incredibly proud to be a Radiographer and regularly assist in careers events at local schools to promote our profession.
