Shane started his professional career as a footballer for Sheffield United and Chesterfield football clubs, as well as gaining youth caps for Northern Ireland. He then returned into education as a mature student, gaining numerous undergraduate and post graduate qualifications. Teaching then beckoned and he gained employment at a number of further education colleges, teaching on a range of A Level and BTEC courses, as well as higher education courses. In 2006 Shane gained employment at Sheffield Hallam University, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity.
Although Shane no longer plays football he has been involved in the game at various levels in a coaching capacity and has coached for both the men's and women's football clubs at Sheffield Hallam University. He still likes to keep fit and enjoys running and cycling and has recently taught himself how to swim front crawl. This may well lead onto Triathlons. His passions are anything to do with sport and physical activity. He strongly believes teaching youngsters physical literacy is just as important as literacy and numeracy.
