Sifullah Khaled

Lecturer in Finance

Summary

With over 15 years of experience across academia and industry, I work at the intersection of climate finance and international development, with a focus on the Global South. My expertise spans poverty reduction, microfinance, Islamic finance, social protection, climate risk insurance, development policies, environmental justice and community-led biodiversity finance framed through a critical, alternative and interdisciplinary lens.

While co-leading a half a million pound research-to-action grant, I worked closely and collaborated with development partners, financial markets regulators, ministries, policymakers, communities, and interdisciplinary academic teams. I also bring extensive teaching experience, having trained students and finance professionals through roles with the Institute for Inclusive Finance and Development, Bangladesh Institute of Capital Market, University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University.

About

With more than fifteen years of professional experience spanning academia and industry, my scholarship lies at the intersection of international development and climate finance, articulated through a critical, pluriversal, and impact-oriented lens. My research interrogates the mobilisation of innovative financial instruments to advance inclusive development and climate resilience, particularly across the domains of social protection, risk management, biodiversity, justice, and policy within the Global South.

I currently co-lead the Re-WET consortium, a £500,000 multi-year initiative funded by the UK FCDO and administered by REDAA/IIED, which pioneers urban wetland restoration in Dhaka’s informal settlements through community-led agroecological stewardship and novel socio-biodiversity financing modalities. I have also consulted for Oxfam, WFP, UNDP and the Green Climate Fund, contributing expertise on climate risk insurance and adaptation finance.

At Sheffield Hallam University, I deliver a diverse portfolio of finance modules embedding sustainability and climate perspectives. I also taught Corporate Finance and Sustainable Finance modules at the University of Sheffield. Under the research administration, I further served as Postgraduate Research Representative at GCU London, advocating for student wellbeing, research continuity, and inclusive pedagogical engagement. I held senior academic and leadership roles at the Bangladesh Institute of Capital Market and the Institute for Inclusive Finance and Development, where I contributed to the design of flagship postgraduate programmes in applied finance, microfinance, and capital markets.

My research has been published in journals, including the Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences, Insurance Journal, and the Journal of Finance and Banking. I have authored policy briefs for UNU-EHS and contributed to several commissioned studies for development partners. My doctoral research in Climate Finance at GCU London examines poverty reduction, social protection, and sustainable climate risk insurance. I hold two master’s degrees with Distinction in Finance and Economics: an MSc in International Economics and Finance from Glasgow Caledonian University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Dhaka. I have further undertaken prestigious summer schools at Harvard University, UNU-EHS, and Durham University in the fields of Islamic finance, climate and sustainability.

I am an active participant in global research networks, including Climate Change and Social Protection Research Initiative (Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, AFD, GIZ, German Institute of Development and Sustainability, ILO, World Bank, UK FCDO), the Climate Academy (UNU-EHS, Munich Re Foundation, UNFCCC) and the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA). I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My deep commitment to teaching, informed by applied research and experience, led to my nomination for the Inspirational Teaching Award-2024 at Sheffield Hallam University. Beyond academic engagement, my work has been profiled in policy and media platforms, where I highlight actionable pathways for devolved climate and biodiversity finance.
