A-Level and BTEC grades
Our response to the Government announcements on A-Level and BTEC grades
Wednesday 26 August
We know that 2020 has been an extremely challenging year for students looking forward to starting their studies at Sheffield Hallam this September. Therefore, over the Clearing and Confirmation period, we have tried to be as flexible, fair and understanding as possible, by confirming places for a large number of students at slightly below the offers we made to them earlier in the year.
A-Level Grades
Following the announcement on Monday 17 August about A-Levels and GCSEs, we are pleased that student will be awarded grades based on Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) which better reflect their capability and potential to succeed.
We have now received the revised A-Level grades from UCAS and are in the process of reviewing all impacted applications.
We have started to contact applicants by email where grades have changed. As we have a large volume of applications to review, it will take us a few days to contact all applicants. Please bear with us, we will provide applicants with amended decisions as soon as we possibly can. You do not need to take any action in the meantime. If your grades have changed, we will be in touch
If you have been accepted on your preferred Sheffield Hallam course
- If your place at Sheffield Hallam has already been confirmed you don’t need to do anything. Monday's announcement does not affect your place at Sheffield Hallam and we look forward to welcoming you next month.
If you have not been accepted on your preferred course, or not had your place confirmed, and are now expecting your A-Level grade to be changed
- As soon as we received the revised A-Level grades from UCAS we began the process of reviewing decisions (see details above).
- Alternatively you can ask your school or college to send a copy of your Centre Assessed A-Level Grades to application-appeals@shu.ac.uk. We will then contact you to confirm next steps.
- If you have not been successful in being offered a place at Sheffield Hallam (or have been offered a place on a different course) and now receive a higher grade(s) we will review your application on an individual basis. We will seek to honour the original offer as far as reasonable.
- There may be a very small number of cases where we cannot do so due to constraints such as the set number of available work placements for certain health or teaching courses. In this case we will offer you a place at the next available intake.
If you are applying through clearing and now expect your A-Level grades to be changed
- We are now making provisional clearing offers based on Centre Assessed A-Level Grades. Your offer will be dependent upon confirmation of your grades being provided either by your school or college or being confirmed by UCAS.
BTEC qualifications
On Wednesday 19 August the Government announced that BTEC Level 3 awards would also be reviewed. We have now received the revised results from UCAS and are in the process of reviewing all impacted applications.
We will contact applicants as soon as possible by email where changes result in a change to confirmation decisions. As we have a large volume of applications to review, it will take us a few days to contact all applicants. Please bear with us, we will provide applicants with amended decisions as soon as we possibly can. You do not need to take any action in the meantime.
