Structural testing
This PhD aims to develop work by means of the relatively new Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) that permits a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of fracture and crack propagation in advanced composite structures
Building performance and renewable energy technology evaluation
At the Centre for Infrastructure Management, we can monitor and evaluate the in-service performance of buildings incorporating new energy efficient technologies such as photo-voltaic, solar thermal hot water and ground source heat pumps.
Product development
The Centre for Infrastructure Management has an extensive expertise in assisting organisations to develop innovative products to remain competitive, including concept generation, novel pipe couplings, accelerated concrete curing technology and corrosion prevention systems.
Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE)
Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) is a method which provides a view of the occupants’ appraisal of the building and assesses how well the building matches the users' requirements. POEs are normally conducted a year after the building has been in use.
CIM PhD Research Opportunities
The Centre for Infrastructure Management has a number of research topics available for PhD projects in the structural concrete, structural steel, cementitious and non-cementitious materials, conservation of heritage structures, and energy efficiency infrastructure areas.
Building insulation testing
At the Centre for Infrastructure Management, we are able to evaluate and test the comparative thermal performance of reflective and multi-foil insulations.
Repair and rehabilitation solutions
Our research in this area is designed to enable us to condition monitor, inspect and survey infrastructure, e.g. bridges, buildings, heritage structures, underground systems, water retaining structures, and give expert advice on their repair and maintenance.
Other testing services within CIM
The Centre for Infrastructure Management can test a wide range of materials and products. A brief of each test we perform is given below.
