Introduction
The Advancing Learning and Teaching for Practice (ALTP) module builds on the Learning and Teaching for Practice module, exploring education within a broader organisational context.
It develops educational leadership by applying theory, reflection, and evidence-based approaches to support workplace learning, helping professionals facilitate learning for students and colleagues across diverse practice settings.
Who is this course/module for?
The Advancing Learning and Teaching for Practice (ALTP) module is designed for health and social care professionals who teach, supervise, or support learning in practice settings. It is particularly relevant for practitioners involved in student supervision, mentorship, staff development, or clinical education, who want to develop their skills as educators and educational leaders in the workplace.
What you’ll learn
The learner will develop a deeper understanding of educational theories and their application to workplace learning in health and social care. The learner will critically reflect on teaching practice, evaluate different perspectives on education, and consider learning within a wider organisational context. The learner will also develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to effectively facilitate learning for students and colleagues in practice settings, identify evidence-based solutions to educational challenges, and strengthen their role as an educational leader.
Skills you’ll gain
You will develop skills in preparing for and engaging in collaborative learning through guided activities, webinars, and discussion of pre-reading materials. The module also strengthens reflective learning, critical thinking, and the ability to apply learning activities to build a portfolio of understanding and complete a summative assignment.
How you’ll learn
This module is designed as a blended learning experience accessible to distance learners. Reading and reflective tasks are set to help you prepare for peer and tutor-facilitated discussions, as well as for the summative writing assignment. Group discussion is highly valued in this module as an example of constructivist learning, and we encourage all students to work collaboratively to create an extended learning community for professional healthcare education.
You can support each other in raising the standard of learning and promoting effective, evidence-based educational experiences in the workplace. Your learning community may include fellow course participants, but it should also extend to your own network of clinical colleagues.
