Introduction
This distance learning module explores Magnetic Resonance imaging (MR/MRI) principles and practice in detail, allowing radiographers new to the modality or who aspire to progress into MRI to develop knowledge, skills and confidence.
Who is this course/module for?
Radiographers who currently work in MRI, are new to post or who aspire to develop within the modality.
What you’ll learn
The 30 credit module covers MRI principles including hardware, image formation, optimisation, post-processing and artefacts; MRI-specific safety; anatomy recognition and image interpretation; contrast, pharmacology and PGDs; current and emerging MRI technologies; clinical applications and protocol design; and development of clinical reasoning, leadership, prioritisation, and service improvement in MRI practice.
Skills you’ll gain
- Applying MRI scientific principles (image formation, optimisation, artefacts)
- Knowledge of safety in MRI.
- Recognise normal MRI anatomy, identify findings and escalate appropriately.
- Clinical decision-making and prioritisation skills.
- Safe and effective patient care, including contrast use, risks, and patient safety considerations
- Use MRI protocols appropriately for different clinical indications
- Produce clear, accurate written communication (e.g. preliminary evaluations)
How you’ll learn
Learning materials will be made available to you on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE/Blackboard) as learning ‘packages’ - this may include reading materials, recorded presentations, media links and research publications to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the topic areas through your own study.

Entry requirements
An HCPC registered Radiographer achieving an award at BSc of 2:1 or above (or equivalent) or with 5 years+ clinical post qualification experience.
Students must have reliable internet access and supply IELTS of 6.5 or above (or equivalent).

Attendance
Delivery Method:
Synchronous online learning (distance learning). Take part in live, timetabled online sessions using tools like video calls and virtual classrooms. You’ll learn in real time with tutors and other students, with no need to attend campus for teaching or assessments.
