Principles in Oncology Treatment and Management

Introduction
Within some roles in oncology, there is a need to support the patient through their pathway with the inclusion of therapeutic interventions, without the requirement for non-medical prescribing.
This module allows for further exploration of this area to support those making decisions for patients directly involving interventions or for those who have an interest in developing their knowledge base to support patients in their care.

What you’ll learn
Learners will understand the core pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of medications used to manage toxicities, alongside oncology pathophysiology. They will develop awareness of co-morbidities, frailty, and polypharmacy; understand Patient Group Directions and the principles of oncology treatment; support self-management; and effectively recognise and manage acute oncology emergencies in clinical practice.

How you’ll learn
Learning will occur through diverse teaching methods, including recorded presentations, web resources, and webinars that integrate multidisciplinary perspectives. Learners will engage in self-directed study, critical reflection and online discussions. Formative e-tivities and feedback will support enquiry-based learning, development of clinical reasoning, and preparation for summative assessment, with additional support through tutorials and online communication.

Entry requirements
Academic Qualifications
The learner may be a registered healthcare professional from a nursing, pharmacy, or allied health professional background.
Professional qualification such as a first degree at a minimum of 2:2 or equivalent.Current registration as required for the practice of your base profession.
Other formally certified qualifications
Equivalent international academic and/or professional qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
Level of English language capability
If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each skill area.
Relevant work or work-related experience
You will typically be working in a specialist role or moving into one within the field of radiotherapy and/or oncology.
You must have managerial / employer support and a nominated mentor in a suitable role to support your development during the course. This will typically be a Health Professional already working within an advanced role, a Clinician, or a Consultant / Advanced Clinical Practitioner. To satisfy these requirements, a letter of support from your manager/employer will be required before you commence the course.
You must be prepared to embrace the challenges of level 7 study, including online and remote learning, have access to a reliable internet connection to support engagement with the course and have sound IT skills.

Attendance
Delivery Method:
Distance learning (fully online, independent study). Delivered entirely online through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), with no live sessions. Students study independently using guided materials and activities, with online academic support available to help them stay on track.

Provisional timetable
This module does not have a specific timetable of study days and times, that you are expected to attend. Your tutor will direct you through a series of learning resources and activities, including non-live discussions and live webinars. The latter will be recorded for people who cannot join the live sessions. If you would like to know the times for the live sessions in advance, you can request this from the module leader anytime from 17th August 2026.
