"An MSc in Public Health at Sheffield Hallam gave me a great foundation."

After completing an MSc in Public Health at Sheffield Hallam, Daisy Forman is now pursuing a PhD within the university’s Sport and Physical Activity Research Centre.
“I’m currently studying for a PhD at Sheffield Hallam. My research is based in the Sport and Physical Activity Research Centre, and involves planning and carrying out independent research, writing academically, and attending conferences to share my work and learn from others in the field.”
Daisy is building a research career shaped by her postgraduate studies and using the knowledge she gained on the course every day.
“The Public Health MSc gave me a great foundation — from research skills and data analysis techniques, to understanding health policy and real-world challenges. These skills are a big part of my day-to-day work as a PhD student, especially when reviewing literature or academic writing.
“I chose to study Public Health at Hallam after having a very positive experience during my undergraduate degree in Adult Nursing. The support I received and the fact that so many of the staff are active researchers made it the right choice for my postgraduate studies, too. I knew it would be the right place to help me build on my skills and achieve my academic goals.”
For Daisy, the course wasn’t just about academic content — it was the community and practical experience that helped bring it to life.
“One of the highlights of the course was interacting with students from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds. Learning alongside peers with diverse experiences enhanced my understanding of public health issues from multiple perspectives.
“The course offered various workshops and opportunities to work on live public health issues. These experiences helped me connect theory with practice and reflect on my clinical background, which boosted my research and critical thinking skills.
“The library resources at Sheffield Hallam were great — loads of resources, which were up-to-date and easily accessible. The library staff were very helpful and approachable, which helped when I was studying and researching.”
Daisy credits her tutors and academic advisors with helping her shape her next steps and move confidently into research.
“The support was great, during and after my studies! My academic advisors and supervisors were approachable and always available for guidance and advice. Whether it was talking through ideas or getting feedback on work, they were always there when I needed them. Their encouragement, motivation and expertise throughout the course made a massive difference, and I was encouraged to think about my career and the possibility of applying for a PhD.
“The course gave me the confidence and skills I needed to take the next step. It taught me how to think critically, manage my research, and present my work — all of which are essential for my PhD journey.
“Looking ahead, I aim to complete my PhD and pursue a research career, especially in areas where I can help shape public health policy or NHS guidance. I’m interested in projects that involve working directly with communities to improve health outcomes.
“Sheffield is an incredible student city! There’s always something to do, and it’s a friendly, welcoming place to live and study. I’d recommend it to anyone!
