Mark is a PhD research student at the Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology. He has been featured on BBC Look North for his research into how mixed martial arts (MMA) training sessions can greatly improve the lives of people who are at risk of homelessness in Sheffield.
Mark, who runs the project, hopes the sessions will be replicated across the country and shares how the people taking part are benefitting from their experience.
“Before the MMA sessions, the people attending the sessions may have been more prone to deal with stress either by having negative spirals into mental health or using poor coping mechanisms like taking drugs.
“They’re able to transfer the skills and control they’ve developed through mixed martial arts training to the outside world and go on to achieve some really good things.”
Watch Mark talk about his research, and hear from some of the people whose lives have been transformed by the sessions.
