"Why I chose to be a nurse"

"Why I chose to be a nurse"

Alex Morton is an BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) student who has always known he wanted to be a nurse, here he tells us why the role is so worthwhile and why he chose Sheffield Hallam University for his training.

“I’ve always wanted to become a nurse, I’ve always wanted to help people. Nursing is my passion and you have to want to help people in order to make a difference.

Previous to nursing I worked within private care as a registered care home manager and clinical support worker. I felt I wanted to take the next step in my development and become a nurse. The ability to independently care for your own patients with minimal supervision, and become more independent as you get further into study is the best feeling.

I’ve worked in all sorts of different roles on placement covering theatre, community, respiratory, acute medical units and intensive care. Sheffield Hallam is set up to provide such a range of opportunities to build your skills. My favourite was working in the theatres, I got to deal with patients post recovery which was very interesting and also provided the opportunity to work with other health professionals as we also do within our course training.

Sheffield Hallam sets you up for a positive outcome, throughout the course the support they give you is really embedded at every stage, which sets Hallam apart.

You have academic advisors to support you, lecturers who help you to identify key factors of what’s expected of assignments, link lecturers who support you when out on placement and who regularly keep in touch and identify any needs you may have.

To anyone thinking of studying nursing, It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not everyone can be a nurse and it’s amazing to be able to say you can nurse and care for people.”
