"Our course helped us to get involved with a once in a lifetime experience."

BA (Hons) Acting and Performance students Haris and Salome had the opportunity to work on a community project called ‘Walk with Amal.

Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee child, over the last year she has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees.

Starting in July 2021, Amal ‘walked’ over 9,000km, visited 80 cities including Sheffield and has been welcomed by more than a million people on the street, as well as by tens of millions online.

Haris and Salome helped to make sure the welcome Amal received in Sheffield was a memorable and amazing experience, through performance and working with members of the community to bring the event to life.

Haris Sadiq ‘For me it was liberating and I think anyone who wants to express themselves artistically, should definitely push themselves into doing this kind of stuff.’

Salome Hakunandaba ‘I would recommend it, 100%, it’s just the best experience ever’

Amal’s journey now continues and In June 2023, Amal will visit the Luminato Festival Toronto.
