‘I volunteered over 900 hours of my time while studying my course’

BSc (Honours) Physical Education and School Sport student, Isobella Cottrell, has volunteered over 900 hours of her time over the past three years, in a variety of netball-related and sport volunteer roles including coaching, umpiring, organising and teaching. Izzy has been a member of Hallam Netball and represented Sheffield Hallam at British Universities and Colleges Sports level.

‘While visiting an open day, the passion and enthusiasm of the lecturers and students really stood out. It made up my mind that I wanted to be part of the Sheffield Hallam Physical Education and School Sport community.’

‘A big factor for me was the university’s links with the local community and access to world-class facilities, such as the English Institute of Sport and Ponds Forge.’

In addition to being awarded the East Midlands Netball Young Volunteer of the Year for three consecutive years (2017–2020), Izzy was awarded the UK Coaching National Young Coach of the Year in 2018 and England Netball’s National Young Volunteer of the Year in 2019.

‘My lecturers have always been really supportive of my coaching and volunteering commitments outside of university. Volunteering is amazing because it provides a chance to give back to those people and organisations who have helped you.’

Alongside gaining practical course knowledge, Izzy was supported with her academic development through The Skills Centre. She accessed a range of in-person and online workshops on how to access academic literature and extended essay writing.

‘I’ve been able to practically apply knowledge learned on my course to my work opportunities, volunteering and 6-week placement in my second year.’

'Communication, teamwork and organisation along with integrity and honesty are fundamental qualities for any teacher and these are promoted throughout the whole of the physical education and school sport degree. My confidence and communication skills have increased greatly thanks to volunteering. I’ve also made some great friends along the way.’

More recently, Izzy has taken up a voluntary role on the National Youth Sport Trust forum, which involves advising National Governing Bodies and the Government on the latest School Sport and Physical Activity Plan. After completing her PGCE, Izzy plans to become a secondary school PE teacher.

‘My advice would be to take the opportunities that are presented to you. These experiences help you become a better teacher. Most importantly, remember to enjoy your time learning new skills and meeting new people!’
