'It was surreal being interviewed by teachers from the telly.'

Louise Hirst graduated with a BSc Science with Education and Qualified Teacher Status in 2014.

She beat hundreds of applicants to land her first teaching job at Britain's best known school, Thornhill Academy – as featured on Channel 4's Educating Yorkshire.

‘Sheffield Hallam gave me opportunities to work in four different schools. My best memory is a GCSE class who came to see me after their exam and told me they found it easy. Knowing that I had given them the knowledge to go in to their exam feeling confident and happy was satisfying and made the hard work worthwhile.

‘Having my own classroom and my own students is something I really looked forward to during my course, so to get a job at the end of it is amazing. It was really surreal going for the interview and seeing teachers who I'd watched on telly. Now I enjoy coming to work every day as no day is ever the same.’
