Between 1991 and 1995, Dan worked as a research associate within the Quantitative Criminology Group at Manchester University with Professor Ken Pease, working on a number of projects utilising the British Crime Survey data to assess and explain patterns of repeat victimisation, and the econometric modelling of crime victimisation. From 1996 until 1998, and then worked with Prof. Rebecca Emerson Dobash and Professor Russell Dobash evaluating two cognitive behavioural based programmes for domestic violence offenders in Scotland.

Dan has also acted as consultant to a wide range of evaluation projects involving large scale crime prevention initiatives (he was consultant to the Northern Consortium of the Burglary Reduction Programme 1999-2001), and the Crime Reduction in Secondary Schools Programme (2000-2002); court based innovations (the development of the Leeds Domestic Violence Cluster Court) as well as a variety of smaller scale CCTV and other crime prevention initiatives.

The teaching aspect of Dan's post at Manchester Metropolitan University enabled him to develop a thorough knowledge of criminological theory and criminal justice policy and practice. Although predominantly a teaching role, the senior lecturer role at Manchester Metropolitan University also involved a range of research opportunities, including a key role in the HEIF funded Regeneration North Consortium, which involved collaboration between four HE Institutions in the North of England, delivering urban regeneration related projects across four themes, including crime. Dan acted as the crime themes leader across all MMU projects, as well as leading one particular project, on the police processing of domestic violence and involved in two others. Dan was also involved in some small projects estimating the cost-effectiveness of domestic violence advocacy in Cheshire, and assessing the impact of a Respect Action Neighbourhood initiative in Manchester.

Dan joined the Hallam Centre for Community Justice in 2009 and is heavily involved in the Integrated Offender Management and Intensive Alternatives to Custody evaluations.
