My name is Dave Phillips and I succeeded Simon Feasey as course leader in August 2005.

My career began as a teacher in comprehensive schools in London and Bristol. I sought a change of direction and so between 1981 and 1983 I trained as a probation officer at the University of Sheffield. I developed my experience in a number of different settings in the Nottinghamshire Probation area, including working in courts, prisons, field teams and group programmes. I also qualified as a practice teacher and then became a PDA and acquired the relevant NVQs.

In 2001 I joined Birmingham University, on secondment, and taught on the DIPs programme. I then worked for the Midland Consortium before joining Sheffield Hallam University in September 2004. I also contributed to the making of an interactive CD-rom (2003) with the University of Birmingham. This provided an interactive and individual learning experience to enable students to examine aspects of diversity and combat racism.

I am co-review editor of the British Journal Of Community Justice. My continuing interests are in the future structure of the Probation Service, the measurement of risk, and organisational theory.

I enjoy working with colleagues in training. One of the great pleasures, for me, is in working with people from diverse backgrounds and experience and learning from them.

I teach on the following modules

  • Working in an inter agency and Organisational and Community Context Developing Effective Practice
  • Continuing Professional Development
  • Managing Offenders and implementing Sentences including Accredited Programmes

I also teach on the PSO induction programme.
