Harpreet Bains has extensive research experience within the social sciences. She has conducted research for the department of Communities and Local Government and Bexley Council for Equality and Diversity. Harpreet has provided a consultancy service for Greenwich Council for Racial Equality and HM Prison Service.
Apart from the work conducted for HM Prison Service, Harpreet's interest in the criminal justice system has developed through teaching Crime and Society and lecturing on Race and Crime at the University of Sheffield. MA lectures have also been given on 'Policy at the micro level: Examples from the criminal justice system'. Harpreet has worked closely with the police, in the Bexley borough, to set up a Race Hate Crime Panel and has provided Race Relations Training to the Metropolitan Police.
Harpreet has specific interests in South Asian communities, masculinities, patriarchy, gender and generational shifts. Other than the work in the criminal justice field, Harpreet has worked extensively with ethnic minority communities, in particular, the South Asian community in the UK. Harpreet's interest in the South Asian community has emerged from her doctoral thesis (2006) where she explored issues of patriarchy, generational shifts and identity. Working as a research fellow at Edinburgh University (2007), Harpreet has been responsible for conducting qualitative reseach on the health of the South Asian migrant population.
As a member of the Greenwich Council for Racial Equality Harpreet is responsible for working closely with the Greenwich Police, Belmarsh Prison and community orgainisations to ensure and maintain community cohesion within the borough.
