Dr Holly Wilcockson BSc. MSc. PhD

Research Associate

Summary

I am a Research Associate in the Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology (CeBSAP). My research focuses on health psychology and behavioural science. I have specific research interests relating to fertility, perinatal health and wellbeing (mothers and fathers), and parenting.

About

After graduating from the University of Leicester in 2007 (BSc Psychology, First Class hons.), I moved to Rome, Italy, where I got a job as a researcher for a small company that conducted contract research on European Commission FP7 projects. For 3 1/2 years I led workstreams and projects exploring the ethical and social implications of emerging technologies. I then moved to the Netherlands to complete an MSc in Cognitive & Clinical Neuroscience, specialising in Neuropsychology (Maastricht University, 2013). Following a few years working for a charity and as a Clinical Psychology Assistant, I returned to university to undertake my PhD which explored 'Mindful Future Thinking' (Swansea University, 2020).

During my final year of the PhD, I obtained a position as a researcher with Dr Lynne Barker at Sheffield Hallam University, and worked on two neuropsychology projects; 'Pre-clinical development of Cog-LAB a computerised cognitive assessment tool for use with neurological patients' and 'Can a 12-week probiotic intervention improve wellbeing in Parkinson’s Disease? A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot study'. I then joined the Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology as a permanent researcher in 2019. Here I work on a variety of research projects applying behavioural science theory to explore factors that influence behaviour in real world settings, and to design and test behavioural interventions. Topics have included COVID-19 health-related behaviours, vaccine hesitancy, active travel and the engagement of families with Family Hubs services, including a new fathers' support group; outreach work with families who have English as a second language and improving uptake of 2 year developmental health visitor reviews in a London borough.

As an Early Career Researcher, I am in the process of developing my own research interests and networks. I am currently working with colleagues on a study exploring self-compassion in relation to infertility, and am also developing a study exploring the support-seeking behaviour of parents during the perinatal phase.
