Mr Long Li BEng MSc RD FHEA

Senior Lecturer in Dietetics

Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in Dietetics and the Course Leader for the MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration) course. As a member of the British Dietetic Association's England Board, I represent the professional interests of members within England. In addition, I collaborate with the National Health Service (NHS) on various projects, including my role as the Clinical Lead for Dietetics within the NHS England's GIRFT Programme's Head and Neck Cancer Workstream, which involves reviewing head and neck cancer services across England. My interests are in evidence-based dietetic education, complex nutritional support, and enhancing dietetic practice through audit, service evaluation, and quality improvement.

About

I studied my first degree in Pharmacy in China, followed by a Master's in Nutritional Epidemiology at the University of Leeds. Subsequently, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, qualifying as a Dietitian.

My career in the NHS spanned various roles, predominantly in acute hospitals, with significant experience in acute medicine and complex nutrition support in various specialties. Most recently, I served as the Head and Neck Dietitian and Oncology Team Lead at a London hospital, overseeing clinical supervision for oncology and medical dietitians. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I provided care to patients in critical care units, gaining firsthand experience in looking after this patient group, which I now utilize in my teaching.

I embarked on a teaching career in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Surrey. My innovative teaching methods have garnered exceptional feedback from students and recognition through a faculty prize for excellence in enhancing student experiences.

As an active member of professional networks, I currently hold a position on the British Dietetic Association (BDA) England Board, representing the professional interests of members within England. Additionally, I am a member of both the BDA Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Specialist Group Committee and the BDA Head and Neck Oncology Sub-group Committee. My extensive professional network ensures that my teaching is constantly infused with the latest professional developments and resources, enabling students to stay abreast of contemporary professional knowledge and practices.

I am also highly engaged in social media, focusing on promoting the role of dietitians. This dedication was recognised with the 2023 CN Award for Social Media Personality of the Year and a finalist position for the 2023 BDA Social Media Influencer of the Year.

I joined Sheffield Hallam University in 2024 as a Senior Lecturer in Dietetics and Course Leader for Dietetics. Concurrently, I am the Clinical Lead for Dietetics at NHS England for the GIRFT Head and Neck Cancer Work Stream, reviewing services across England.

My research interests lie in dietetic education, complex nutrition support, and service improvement. Currently, I am investigating strategies to support international dietetics students in the UK, aiming to bolster their retention in the NHS workforce post-qualification.
