  • About

Mark Doel graduated from Oxford University (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and qualified as a social worker at Hull University. He is a registered social worker and has almost twenty years of social work practice experience with communities. He has worked for two separate years in the United States, as a social worker and social work researcher. He held a joint appointment for ten years as both social worker and university lecturer in Sheffield and developed his models of student supervision during this period. He is well known for his work developing the practice curriculum, holistic methods of assessment, task-centred practice, group work and service user participation.

Mark was Head of School of Social Work at Birmingham City University, one of the largest in the UK, and Research Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, becoming Emeritus Professor in 2010. He continues to supervise doctoral students, to write, to work as an External Examiner and reviewer and to deliver training workshops in group work and practice education, including a model of live supervision in social work. He has written many scholarly articles and published his twenty-first book in 2017, Social Work in 42 Objects (and more).

Mark has an international reputation, having helped develop social work education and practice in Russia and Eastern Europe since 1993; he has had a particularly strong partnership with colleagues in Georgia at Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Association of Social Workers to develop social work education (two major EU Tempus projects). He was Visiting Scholar at Pretoria University (2016) and Lithuanian Educational Sciences University (2017). Two of his books have been translated into Georgian and six others into Russian, Japanese and Italian.
