Professor Mark Doel PhD, MA (Oxon), CQSW

Emeritus Professor


Summary

Dr Doel has twenty years' experience as a community-based social worker in the UK. He has an international reputation in groupwork, social work practice methods and practice education. He has worked in the US as a social worker and researcher and headed several international projects, especially in Eastern Europe. Mark has edited two journals and published 23 books, the latest being a revised second edition of Social Work: The Basics. He hosts the Social work in 40 objects websitewhich has generated more than 160 objects and their stories from 28 countries around the globe. He is researching and developing the use of Object in social work practice.   

About

Dr. Doel graduated from Oxford University (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and qualified as a social worker at Hull University. He is a registered social worker and has almost twenty years’ experience of direct social work practice with communities. He has worked for two separate years in the United States, as a social worker and social work researcher. He held a joint appointment for ten years as both social worker and university lecturer in Sheffield and developed his models of student supervision during this period. He is well known for his work developing the practice curriculum and practice portfolio, task-centred practice, groupwork and service user participation.

Mark was Head of School of Social Work at Birmingham City University, one of the largest in the UK, and Research Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, becoming Emeritus Professor in 2010. He continues to write, to work as an External Examiner and reviewer, and to deliver Conference keynotes and training workshops, mainly in groupwork, practice education and dilemmas in practice. He has published many scholarly articles as well as twenty-three books, most recently a completely revised second edition of Social Work: The Basics.

Mark has an international reputation, having helped develop social work education and practice in Russia and Eastern Europe since 1993; he was awarded Honorary Professor (Doctor) at Tbilisi State University, Georgia, and visiting Scholar at Pretoria University, South Africa, Batumi State University, Georgia, at Lithuanian Educational Sciences University and at Universidad de los Lagos, Chile, where he is collaborating in the development of a Spanish-language sister Objects website, https://40objetos.ulagos.cl/galeria/  Mark chairs the International Committee of the International Association for Social Work with Groups, where he was Vice President. Nine of his books have been translated into five languages.

Teaching

As Emeritus Professor, Dr Doel gives occasional lectures in Health and Wellbeing.
He leads post-qualifying workshops and keynote presentations for social work and allied professionals at post-qualifying level.

Developing a theory and practice of Object in social work [with Coram/BAAF] – experimental design teams in Sheffield, London and New York; a training programme for social workers and foster carers with Coram/BAAF.

Social Work in 40 Objects: an experimental website to understand social work through artefacts and stories; and a comparative research project with Universidad de los Lagos (Osorno, Chile) into the meanings given to social work via objects in a Latin American context.
