Mark Godson

Dr Mark Godson BSc MBA DBA

Principal Lecturer

Summary

I have been teaching marketing at university level for over 25 years. My areas of interest are Relationship Marketing, customer co-creation, and the impact of social media on marketing. My doctoral qualification was gained through research into social media in the UK independent brewing industry. Within the university I am a Student Experience Lead, and I am currently working towards Recognised Senior Adviser status in UKAT (UK Advising & Tutoring Association).

About

Prior to joining Sheffield Business School I had a successful career in sales and marketing management. My early years were spent in industrial sales for the Sheffield Company formerly known as Tinsley Wire. I then spent another five years as New Product Development Manager with the John Carr Group (building products) then finally with the Minit Group (retail) as UK Marketing Manager. Before moving into academia full time, I undertook marketing management and project management roles for several European funded projects at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology and Sheffield Business School (pre 2001).

I have been a full time academic since 2001 during which time I have been a Postgraduate Course Leader, a Subject Leader (for the Marketing subject group), a Postgraduate Programme Leader for the International Business and Marketing based degrees, and a Recruitment Lead. Since joining the university I have been heavily involved in international recruitment, initially developing faculty business in Taiwan and then wider South Asia including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China, and Hong Kong.

My current role is Student Experience Lead in the Department of Management, which involves managing student voice (including NSS and PTES); welcome and induction events; student academic societies and course enhancement activities; and overseeing the Academic Advisers which all students have during the course of their studies. In support of this activity I am currently working towards Recognised Senior Adviser status in UKAT.

Since becoming an academic, I have designed and led modules in most of the marketing subject areas, but my specialist teaching areas are Marketing Research, Retail Marketing, New Media Marketing and Relationship Marketing. I am experienced in delivering modules at UG and PG levels, and have supervised PHD students. My relationship marketing teaching is based around a textbook I have written and which was published by Oxford University Press. I have used my experience to provide external examiner services to a number of universities across the UK.

My research interests include Relationship Marketing - customer empowerment and co-creation of value; social media marketing; ethical and sustainable aspects of marketing. Within these areas I am particularly interested in the management of relationships through the use of new technology and social media. This formed the base of my DBA research degree which involved the use of social media among UK independent breweries.
