Paul Allen MA, BA(Hons), DTLLS

Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design

Summary

I joined the Department of Art & Design at Sheffield Hallam University in 2022, having previously served as Course Leader for 8 years on BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Stockport College (validated by SHU). My academic experience includes teaching on undergraduate graphic design programmes validated by Liverpool John Moores University, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the University of Salford.

About

Following graduation from the University of Central Lancashire in 2002, I began my professional career as a graphic designer at a Liverpool-based studio, riding the wave of intensive civic investment leading up to the city's designation as European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Alongside my academic role, I maintain an active practice with an international client base, specialising in editorial, branding, and information design within medical publishing across Europe, Asia Pacific and the United States. In contrast to my commercial work, my current research focuses on the diminishing role of making in contemporary graphic design practice, with an emphasis on reintroducing material and process-led methodologies into design education through collaborative practice with students. As design navigates a new paradigm, my studio teaching facilitates the recognition of, and renewed value in, the human endeavour of making.
