Sheffield Hallam reveals world class estate masterplan

Wednesday 02 May 2018

The University recently launched a 20-year vision to create a sustainable and flexible campus that will support the ambition of becoming the world's leading applied university. The plan includes new buildings for the Business School, Social Sciences, Natural & Built Environment and the refurbishment of the Students' Union building The HUBS. The aim is to bring departments together around a University green and create a striking new main entrance around the Owen building.

The new investment will provide new teaching and learning spaces and a great working environment for staff, students and visitors. The new look city campus will enhance our visibility locally and regionally and support development and regeneration across the region. The new campus masterplan will also aim to minimise the impact on the environment and have an emphasis on sustainability.

Professor Chris Husbands, Sheffield Hallam University Vice-Chancellor, said: "In a shifting and highly competitive landscape, students expect exceptional teaching, in an outstanding environment with increased opportunities. Meeting these expectations will demand imagination, as competition – locally, nationally and globally – increases, and resources tighten. The campus masterplan will provide the foundation and infrastructure required to deliver our ambition."

Alongside this project the University is also proposing to develop a new Sheffield City Gateway, on the site of the former Nelson Mandela building which many alumni know as the original home of the Students Union. The University proposes a mixed use building including restaurants, a hotel, conference facilities and residential units. This proposal was recently launched at the annual MIPIM real estate conference and is seeking partners and investors for development.

Daniel Ladbury, Director of Estates, said: “The University plays a vital role as one of the major employers and capital investors in the region and it's exciting to be able to share our ambitious future plans for our estate and the wider Sheffield City Region. The proposition has been developed with Sheffield City Council's Core Strategy in mind: the site lies within the Sheffield Urban Area which encourages and promotes major development, vibrant and engaging street scenes."
