Sheffield Hallam University will receive £1.1m of an EU Horizon 2020 grant which will combine expertise from the BMRC and MERI, led by Prof Christine Le Maitre and Prof Chris Salmon.

Researchers will investigate the behaviour of stem cells when combined with other bio-materials to establish their suitability and use as part of an innovative treatment for back pain.

The project is a collaboration between SHU and 20 other partners across Europe and is led by Professor Marianna Tryfonidou at Utrecht University. It is hoped the combination of expertise across the 20 universities will prove this treatment is safe and the first steps towards clinically relevant models will be taken to enable this treatment option to be brought closer to the patients.
