Occupational Therapist

Overview

The Occupational Therapist Degree Apprenticeship has been developed in collaboration with the national apprenticeship trailblazer. We have worked with regional partners from primary and acute care and local authorities to develop our apprenticeship offer.
 
The apprenticeship is suitable for both existing staff such as therapy assistants or support workers, and people new to the sector.
 
This apprenticeship prepares people for a career as a qualified occupational therapist by providing the underpinning knowledge and interpersonal skills the profession demands. The course is intended to develop the potential of employees, and utilise and build upon their existing knowledge in occupational therapy.
 
The course will deliver against the nationally recognised Level 6 Occupational Therapist Degree Apprenticeship standard. The apprenticeship includes a combination of work-based learning modules and specialist education, which leads to a BSc (Honours) Occupational Therapy. Graduates can apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and can apply to become members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

Course length and entry requirements

The apprenticeship is usually delivered over 30 months. However, every apprentice is different and it will depend on their previous experience.

Participants attend the University on a block-study basis throughout the year – there is a total of eight study weeks in years one and two, and three study weeks in year 3 - and they go on four assessed practice placements. Apprentices can stay with their employer for one placement, provided it is in a different area and under different supervision to their normal job . The other placements must be in different organisations, to meet the requirements of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. The programme adopts a blended learning approach with modules delivered through a combination of lectures, class-based seminars, practical workshops and discussions, online and practice placement learning.

The integrated end-point assessment checks that the employee meets the apprenticeship standard and is ready to join the profession with full occupational competence.

Eligible candidates will meet the following entry requirements

  • The usual entry requirements are GCSE (or equivalent) mathematics, English language or literature, and a science subject at grade C or grade 4, or above – plus one of the following

    • 112 UCAS points from A levels (including at least 40 points from either a natural science subject such as Biology or Human biology, or  a social science subject  such as Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care), or equivalent BTEC National qualifications (including suitable natural or social science modules). We do not accept AS levels or A level General Studies.
    • Access to HE Diploma from a QAA recognised Access to HE course in health studies, health science, nursing or another science-based course. Normally we require 15 credits at level 2 and 45 at level 3 of which at least 30 credits should be graded at distinction level. 
  • Other equivalent qualifications are considered individually.
