Home Improvement Services in England – National Evaluation

Project Director: Jan Gilbertson
Project Duration: 2023-2024

The Centre for Ageing Better are building the evidence base and understanding of what works in terms of home improvement services across England. They have commissioned a consortium of research partners (University of Sheffield, University of Stirling, Foundations, Building Research Establishment) led by CRESR/SHU to evaluate services across England. The evaluation is aiming to do this by:

  • Improving the understanding of what works in terms of home improvements.
  • Capturing the impact of comprehensive home improvement services on individuals, services and systems.
  • Creating shareable learning on the development of comprehensive home improvement services including recommendations on aspects such as creating more collaborative and connected local services.
  • Generating findings which will support Ageing Better in its national government influencing activities.

A range of methods and activities will be deployed throughout the evaluation. A whole strand of work will be dedicated to embedding lived experience into the study. For more information, please contact Jan Gilbertson.

The project team also includes Jenny Preece, David Robinson, Gareth Young (University of Sheffield), Vikki McCall, Steve Rolfe (University of Stirling), Paul Smith (Foundations), Gwyn Roberts and Sion McGregor (Building Research Establishment).
