Hydrogen economies and just transition: an investigation of regional hydrogen experiments in Northern Europe

Project Director: Will Eadson
Project Duration: 2021-2022

Through six in-depth case studies of regional hydrogen economy development in Northern Europe (with cases in England, Scotland, Sweden and the Netherlands), this project seeks to understand implications for just transition of a focus on hydrogen as a potential decarbonisation technology in industrial regions. The project is investigating (1) decision-making processes for investment in hydrogen infrastructure (how is investment prioritised, for which places and who is involved); and (2) what economic and social benefits are perceived for places pursuing hydrogen-based economic strategies, with a particular focus on implications for local citizens.
