We know that getting ready for university can be challenging and you may be worried about how prepared you are for  beginning to study at a higher level. From the moment your place at Sheffield Hallam is confirmed, you'll be supported in your journey to becoming a university student.

Support in September

As part of the unique Hallam Welcome experience, you’ll receive regular updates, key information and have access to a range of resources to help you prepare for starting with us.

The Hallam Welcome provides a comprehensive transition and support programme to ensure all students get off to the best possible start at Sheffield Hallam. Here's what's included:

Digital guide

Our ‘Enrol, Explore, Prepare’ website is your one-stop digital hub to access a wide range of pre-arrival information and resources. We’ll guide you through the key steps you need to take to get started with us.

Insider’s Guide

Your personal guide to starting at Hallam will be mailed out to you once your place is confirmed. It contains all the key information and practical tips you need before and after you join us – including campus maps, tips from current students, and much more.

Hallam Welcome Module

This takes just 30-45 minutes to complete online and covers key topics to help you prepare for living and studying at Sheffield Hallam – including an introduction to student support, wellbeing, finance, accommodation, safety, sport and the Students’ Union.

Academic skills development

Access to our pre-arrival skills assessment tools and academic skills development module, to help you evaluate your study skills, create a development plan for the year ahead, and tap into further tailored support from our skills centre. The module will introduce you to independent learning, academic writing and research skills to help you make a successful start to your studies.

Course welcome activities

Your course welcome schedule will be available for you to access via the website. This will include three key sessions  a course welcome, a course social and a support session with the student support team for your course.

You’ll also have the opportunity to engage with department or course-specific activities to help further develop your skills and build your confidence ready for university-level study in your subject.  

Welcome Week

Welcome Week features a fantastic range of social events and activities to get involved in, both on campus and online. Delivered in partnership with Hallam Union, activities include campus and city tours, societies and sports fairs, and many more opportunities to meet other students and settle into student life.

Hallam Union membership

When you join Sheffield Hallam you’ll become a member of our Students' Union, giving you access to their societies and volunteering offer, as well as representation from your elected Student Officers.

Three dedicated advisers

As soon as you start your course, you’ll have access to our unique student support triangle, with three dedicated advisers for every student – providing support and advice for personal, academic and career development.

International student support

If you're joining us from overseas you’ll also have access to an extensive package of pre-arrival, arrival and orientation support delivered by our dedicated international experience team.

This includes:

  • Pre-departure briefings, pre-arrival guides, travel advice and visa support
  • Airport pick up and virtual or on-campus meet and greet service
  • 9 day orientation programme to help you settle into student life in Sheffield.

Orientation activities include a welcome dinner, campus tours, visit to the Peak District and sessions on topics such as study skills and finding a part-time job. You’ll have the chance to meet and socialise with other students who will share their insights and experiences.
