It is important that everyone in our University community knows how to protect themselves in the unlikely event of a terrorist or weapons attack. The UK official advice issued to the general public is to familiarise yourself with the national ProtectUK Run Hide Tell guidance.
RUN — escape if you can do so safely
Move away from danger as quickly as you safely can, using a safe route. This includes moving with a wheelchair or mobility aid; you do not have to be able to physically run to escape. If you cannot escape safely, HIDE.
HIDE — if safe escape is not possible
Find somewhere out of sight, with substantial physical protection between you and the attacker where possible. Lock or barricade the door if you can and position yourself away from it. Be quiet, silence your phone and switch off vibrate.
TELL — when it is safe, call the police on 999
Tell them what is happening and your location. If you or someone with you cannot move away or needs assistance, tell the call handler. If you cannot speak, listen to and follow their instructions.

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPS)
If you have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for fire evacuation, the arrangements in place may not be suitable during a weapons attack. The safest response will depend on the circumstances. Your usual escape route, fire refuge or assembly point may not be the safest option in this type of emergency.
Please seek advice if you have concerns using the contacts below.
Planning, advice and support
If you have questions or concerns, planning ahead can help you feel more confident about how you would respond in an emergency. You do not need to share details of your medical condition or diagnosis to discuss emergency planning. The focus is on understanding any practical support you may need in an emergency, such as mobility and access requirements, communication needs and assistance from others.
Any information shared will be treated sensitively and only shared where necessary to support your safety.
To seek advice about your individual circumstances:
- Students should contact Hallam Help if they have concerns.
- Staff should speak to their line manager.
- You can also contact the Health and Safety team directly by emailing ! H&S Enquiries.
