The Power of 10 Festival, run by youth-led environment education charity Another Way, took place at Sheffield Hallam University on Friday 6 March.

Secondary pupils from 15 different schools took part in the event which included designing a collaborative climate campaign to implement over the next year, and a Q&A session with local leaders including Sheffield Central MP Abtisam Mohamed.

Pupils were able to learn about green careers from a panel of experts and those working in green jobs including Sheffield Hallam Professor of Energy Policy, Aimee Ambrose.

They also took part in workshops on the creative industries’ role in climate action, sustainable neighbourhood planning, and climate anxiety.

Tom, a teacher at All Saints Catholic High School, said: “What a fantastic celebration of the power and agency our young people can have. The students have been introduced to a range of conversations, space for exploration and ideas to think about. I feel like all our young students needed to feel the hope that they are capable of making change.”

Lee Jowett, Climate Change and Sustainability Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “We were incredibly proud to host the Power of 10 Festival here at Sheffield Hallam University. Bringing together young people from across South Yorkshire reflects our deep civic commitment to the region and the strength of our partnerships with schools, community organisations and local leaders.

“Events like this showcase how our climate education research and innovation is translating into real-world impact – from collaborative projects with national partners such as Another Way to the development of high-quality teacher professional development and curriculum materials that support confident, evidence-informed climate teaching. We are committed to building a generation of young people who feel empowered, informed and able to shape a more sustainable future.”

Another Way is a youth-led environment education charity, founded by then 16-year-old Amy Bray in 2019, with a mission to empower people to live with kindness towards the planet. The charity supports people to overcome the barriers they face to action, through environmental education, workshops, talks, media and community events.

Young people who attended can now join the Power of 10 digital community to access ongoing support and resources.

Another Way Founder Amy Bray said: “Another Way started Power of 10 to empower young people to take action for our planet, in response to learning that 54% didn't think that school prepared them enough to learn about climate. Our festival in Sheffield was a brilliant success in inspiring young people and celebrating the fact that they care.

“For most of them, this will have been the first opportunity they have ever had to talk about climate with children from other schools and to understand that they can be real agents of change, in their homes, in their schools and in their communities. Another Way will now support the young people who came to put their learning into real action for the planet.”

Sheffield Hallam University is committed to climate action and sustainability, embedding net zero targets, low-carbon innovation, and environmental responsibility across its teaching, research, and campus operations.

The University works in partnership with local communities, businesses, and public sector organisations to drive a just transition that supports regional growth and skills development.
