After being diagnosed with bladder cancer, Mick Elcock, was treated by Professor Derek Rosario, a consultant urological surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and honorary professor at Sheffield Hallam University.

Professor Rosario works closely with Sheffield Hallam University researchers on the NIHR-funded STAMINA project which aims to develop and integrate exercise into the prostate cancer NHS pathway.

Mick’s wife, Tracy, started fundraising during his treatment and, after reaching the £10,000 mark, they made the donation to Sheffield Hallam earlier this month to support the university’s cancer research.

Tracy said: “We give special thanks to Professor Rosario and his team for their exceptional contribution to Mick’s recovery and his new lease of life. Many people who know Mick have donated to his cause. Mick has worked all over the world and this is where the money has come from.

“We chose Sheffield Hallam University as this is where the expertise came from for Mick’s surgery and we want to help other students to carry on the good work to help more people survive this type of cancer.”

Mick, a director at Drillwell Ltd in Killamarsh, said: “Professor Rosario knows just how mentally and physically difficult the operation can be for the patient. He gave me his full support and was always available to help me along the road to recovery. We wanted to give something back after all the help we had from his and his great team.

Liam Bourke, Professor of Cancer Research at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “We are very pleased to accept this donation. Our research always puts patient benefit and real-world impact at the heart of its design, and this support will help us continue to do this.”
