Sheffield Hallam students offer translation services to international athletes

Sheffield Hallam University students have provided translation services to international athletes competing in the Powerlifting Championships that were held in the city this week

For the second year in a row, international students have been supporting as translators for international athletes during the media run-up ahead of the event held at Sheffield City Hall.

Hallam students from courses including nursing, human biology and languages, offered translation support in Italian, Ukrainian and French.

The 2024 Powerlifting Championships, sponsored by SBD Apparel, brings together 24 of the strongest international powerlifters, competing for the largest prize fund in powerlifting history

Will Islip, commercial director of SBD Apparel, said: “‘Developing a collaborative relationship with Sheffield Hallam University has been very beneficial for SBD. The support Sheffield Hallam international students have provided to our media team has enabled media content to be translated, that has supported the build-up of our Sheffield Powerlifting Championships.”

SBD Apparel is a global sportswear brand founded in Rotherham in 2013

The translation services highlight one of the many ways Sheffield Hallam has collaborated with SBD Apparel, and underscores Hallam’s civic agenda. Other collaborations include students in Sheffield Business School using SBD Apparel as a case study for dissertation projects and international business students are currently exploring new international market opportunities for the company. 

Dr Alexandra Anderson, Associate Professor in Enterprise at Sheffield Hallam University, said:Providing varied and exciting opportunities such as this with SBD Apparel are a fantastic way for our students to really showcase their talent. Our students work with companies on many consultancy projects exploring solutions for company challenges, this is a different example but built on a trusted relationships we build with SMEs across the region.”
