The university received the award from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) as part of the CIMA Excellence Awards which celebrate outstanding academic partners, tuition providers and students who have made significant contributions to the accounting profession and the Institute over the past year.

The Global Distinction award recognises three separate achievements for the university.

These include:

  • The Prize-Winner Award, recognising top performing CIMA prize- winning students who graduated from Sheffield Hallam University.
  • The Global Excellence Award which recognises universities from across the globe that achieve high CIMA pass rates with at least 50 CIMA exam sittings from September 2019 to September 2020. Sheffield Hallam achieved 4th place for CIMA Operational Level Exams, 2nd place for CIMA Management Level Exams and 1st place for CIMA Strategic Level Exams.
  • The CGMA Campus of the Year 2020 Award, celebrating universities that have the most graduates in the UK sitting CIMA exams in 2020 and achieving consistently above the average country pass rates for each exam.

Rob Wilson, head of department for finance, accounting and business systems at Sheffield Hallam University said: “This Global Distinction award provides assurance to our accountancy students that our tried and tested approach to teaching provides them with the solid foundations required to enable a thorough understanding of the key aspects of financial strategy and financial reporting issues affecting businesses and organisations across the globe.

“Crucially, our accounting graduates can be confident they've been provided with the learning tools and know-how to excel in the professional exams of CIMA and other leading accountancy bodies around the world.

“A core aim for our department, and the Sheffield Business School, is to provide the best possible environment for our students to succeed. We apply knowledge in an innovative way, using our sector connections to enrich the student experience and promote achievement with Professional Bodies.

“Having CIMA bestow upon us the awards for such excellence, very much reflects the commitment and incredibly hard work that our staff put into their teaching and the efforts our students go to, creating a platform to succeed.”

Andrew Harding, chief executive of management accounting at CIMA said: “The CIMA Excellence Awards honour institutions and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the accounting profession and worked tirelessly to enrich their students, providing them with the best possible education and prepare the next generation of accounting professionals.

“The Global Distinction award received by Sheffield Hallam University is a true testament of its commitment and dedication to building the future of our profession.”

Sponsored by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, the global accounting organisation formed by CIMA and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the CIMA Excellence Awards will be presented annually to those who have made a difference to the global accounting community and proactively supported their students towards earning their Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation - the most widely held management accounting designation in the world.
