He was made a life peer taking the title Lord Smith of Ranmoor, in the City of Sheffield, in recognition of his significant contribution, experience and leadership across a number of sectors.
Lord Smith is the non-executive independent Chairman of Cranswick plc and a leading figure in the UK food and agriculture sector. He has held a number of significant public and industry roles, including co-chair of the Food and Drink Sector Council, member of the Government’s Food Strategy Advisory Board, and Chair of the UK Government’s Trade and Agriculture Commission.
He also serves as a non-executive director of Pret A Manger and as a trustee of the Natasha Allergy Foundation. Previously, he was group quality director at Tesco and Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency. He was appointed Chair of the Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam University in January 2024.
Tim was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to agriculture, food, and drink trade policy in the 2022 New Year Honours.
Speaking about his appointment, Lord Smith of Ranmoor said: “It is a great honour to enter the House of Lords. I hope to use my experience in business, government, food and agriculture, and higher education to make a practical contribution. Sheffield has been central to my life, and my role as Chair of Sheffield Hallam University has reinforced for me the importance of education, skills and opportunity in creating a stronger regional economy. I look forward to bringing that perspective, alongside my long-held interest in food, farming and sustainable growth, to the work of the House.”
Life peers are appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister. Lord Smith of Ranmoor was formally installed at an event on Monday 7 September.
