'Information Challenges for the Smarter City' is part of the ESRC Sheffield Festival of Social Science, being held at Sheffield Hallam University 7-14th November.

Improvements in technology can help researchers, planners, businesses and councils monitor the way we interact with our cities, automate decision-making and make cities more efficient places to live and work. Making the city 'smarter' is a clearimperitive for Sheffield as outlined in the recent 'Smart Sheffield' report. However, the way we collaboratively manage and share social information, and leverage societal benefits from data, requires more integrated approaches and a shared vision for the smarter city. This one day workshop will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and practice and help define future directions and collaborations. We are all stakeholders in a Smarter Sheffield and this workshop seeks to provide an important catalyst.

A strong local economy and thriving local business is imperitiveand 'smarter' working can be key to this. The workshop will incorporate guest speakers from local business, academia, as well as the public sector, time for networking and also round table discussions to help encourage a shared view of what can lead to a Smart Sheffield. As well as discussion and networking on the day.

Keynote presentations will include

  • Chris Dymond, from Unfolding - Unfolding provides independent Digital Transformation and Innovation Strategy for organisations, teams and cities.
  • Dr Simon Polovina, Cultural, Communication and Computing Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University. Simon is Reader in Business Computing and Co-Chairman of the Global University Alliance that partners with the LEAD (Leading Enterprise Architecture Development) practitioner community.
