NITRACOTE

NITRACOTE

EU funded CRAFT Project (2001-2003)

This project is concerned with development of a duplex coating system for steels, bringing together two separate surface treatments in an entirely novel and synergistic way. The process is called NITRACOTE; an initial pulse plasma nitrided layer on steel acting as a vital support to a functional layer of novel physically vapour deposited hard coating.

Risk is high but is justified by the objective of greatly enhanced performance of precision engineering components, large savings in operating costs, and reduced environmental impact of the coatings. A shift to high-tech coating will raise skills levels and improve working conditions.

The research supports the 'Growth' Thematic programme in stimulating increased use of steels through innovative technology, and the development of non-toxic and novel coating processes, seeking to increase employment and quality of life for European Citizens.
