Become an Employability & Placements Rep

Have you completed a sandwich placement and want to use your experience to help other students?

Our Reps work with the Careers & Employability team to support students through their placement journey, promote careers opportunities and help us deliver activities across the University.

It’s a great opportunity to share what you’ve learned from your own placement experience while developing skills and experience that will support your future career.

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for students who have completed a sandwich placement and are returning to university.

You don't need to have completed your placement with a big-name employer or have had the 'perfect' placement experience. We're looking for students with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives who are willing to share what they've learned and help other students.

You might be a good Rep if you:
• Enjoy helping and talking to other students.
• Are willing to share your placement experience and what you learned from it.
• Want to help improve the placement experience for future students.
• Are interested in getting involved in careers events and activities.
• Would like to develop experience in areas such as communication, social media, events, peer support and student engagement.

What will I do as a Placement Rep?

There are different ways to get involved throughout the academic year. Activities may include:
• Supporting placement seekers – in groups settings by sharing your experiences, practical advice and tips from your own placement journey.
• Sharing the student voice – gather feedback from students about searching for and undertaking a placement and share insights with the Careers & Employability team.
• Supporting Careers Fairs and events – help welcome and engage students, support activities and promote the careers support available at Hallam.
• Supporting placement workshops – share your experience with students who are preparing to search and apply for placements.
• Creating social media content – work with us to create student-led content promoting placements, careers opportunities, events and Careers & Employability support.
• Promoting careers opportunities – help raise awareness of Careers Fairs, workshops, employer presentations and other opportunities available to students.
• Supporting student-led activities – help plan and deliver activities that bring placement seekers together to hear from students who have already been through the process.
• Supporting other Careers & Employability activities – there may be opportunities to get involved in additional events and projects throughout the year.

You won't necessarily take part in every activity. There will be opportunities to get involved in different areas depending on the needs of the programme and your interests and availability.

You'll also have opportunities to build your professional network, contribute to the student experience at Hallam and help other students make progress with their placement search.

Placement Rep activities are paid at the agreed student worker rate for the hours you work.

What you learned along the way could make a real difference to a student going through that process now.

Being a Placement Rep gives you the opportunity to turn that experience into something positive: helping other students, influencing how we support placement seekers and gaining further experience before you graduate.

Hallam Award

Your experience as a Placement Rep can also give you examples to reflect on through the Hallam Award.

The Hallam Award helps you recognise and articulate the skills you're developing through experiences outside your course. Reflecting on your Placement Rep activity can help you practise demonstrating your skills and achievements using evidence – useful preparation for future applications and interviews.
