How and when to apply for accommodation

You can apply online for accommodation once you have been made an offer of a place to study here. You will need to wait up to 48 hours after you have accepted your offer before you register and apply.

The online accommodation application system is currently down for maintenance for a little longer than expected and will now be back up on Wednesday 26th July. If you have received a room offer and this is going to significantly delay you being able to respond to the offer, please email accommodation@shu.ac.uk.

Using the online system

This is a two step process

Step 1: register - you will receive a validation email containing your validation code. You only need to register online for accommodation once.
Step 2: login - using your personal registration details and validation code.

New students

Current (Returning) students

If you're a current student you can apply to live back in halls for September entry from 1 December. The deadline for guaranteeing a place in one of your preferred residences is 31 March. Please refer to the full terms of conditions of application.

Application process

The application process differs depending on which student category you are. Before you apply you should check which category applies to you. Choose from the list below

  • September entry - undergraduate UK and international students

If you're a new undergraduate student starting university in September, you can apply for accommodation online from December.

If you're a current student you can now apply to live back in halls from December each year.

New UK students - if you have an unconditional offer of study and you have made Sheffield Hallam University your firm choice, you will be made an offer of accommodation by email from summer. However applications from students with a conditional offer of study will be held until confirmation from UCAS has been received and University academic conditions have been met. Once your status has changed through UCAS to an unconditional firm and you meet the academic requirements for the course, you will be offered accommodation.

New EU international students - unconditional firm students will be made an offer of accommodation from summer onwards. Conditional firm applications will be held until confirmation has been received from UCAS and all the University academic conditions have been met. When your status has changed to unconditional firm and you meet the academic requirements for the course and obtained a visa (if applicable), then you will be offered accommodation.

Please refer to the full terms of conditions of application.

  • September entry - postgraduate UK and international students

    Applying for halls of residence

If you're a new postgraduate student starting University in September, you can apply for accommodation online at the beginning of January.

If you're a current student you can now apply to live back in halls from December each year.

    Applying for private sector accommodation

We recognise that mature students may not want to live in a hall with undergraduate students. You may prefer to choose to live in a flat or bedsit where you have your own cooking facilities, in one of our quieter residences, or in a private sector house with your partner or family. We have a register of private sector accommodation to suit all tastes or you can apply for househunting events.

Please refer to the full terms of conditions of application.

  • January or March entry

If you are starting a course in January or March 2017 you can apply for accommodation from October 2016.

Please note: If you are arriving in January or March 2017, you will need to select your year of study as 2016/17 on the application form.

January starters will be contacted in December.

March starters will be contacted in February

    March Entry Nursing Students

Please be aware that the majority of Students studying at Sheffield Hallam start their courses in September. Therefore halls of residence traditionally offer fixed contracts from September to July to cover these courses.

Rooms which are vacated during this period which are suitable and still available in February are offered to March entry students.

If we are able to offer you a room in halls you will be moving in with flat mates who are already settled in Sheffield.

The majority of flats will consist of students studying a variety of courses.

Your contract in halls will end in July the same as the other students living in your flat. You might find it useful to contact Accommodation Services after you have settled to discuss accommodation options for the remainder of your course.

In the unlikely event that we are unable to find suitable accommodation in halls you will be referred to our expertly organised private sector team who will assist in your search for accommodation.

  • Non-Sheffield Hallam University students

If you're not a Sheffield Hallam University student and you want to apply for one of our residences, complete this online form with your full details.

We need this information in order to issue you with an ID number so you can apply online. Failure to provide this information will delay your application. Once you have your ID number you can apply online.
