When to start looking
Sheffield is home to plenty of excellent rental properties.
Landlords usually start advertising properties as early November ready for the following September but this doesn’t mean you have to start house hunting immediately. You'll have plenty of time to find one that suits you, so make sure you visit a few different ones to get an idea of what's available.
We recommend you wait until at least after the Christmas break before signing a tenancy agreement for your next academic year. Even students who don't start looking until the summer before the semester starts still secure great properties!
Where to find private rental properties
Studentpad
There are many ways to find student accommodation. You could make enquiries at local lettings agents or search online, or we recommend using our online property listings site, Studentpad, to find rental properties in and around Sheffield.
You can use it to search for student houses, flats and rooms. You can filter results by:
- type of accommodation
- contract type
- living arrangements
- number of bedrooms
- location
- price of rent
- date property is available.
You can meet potential housemates through the Studentpad message board.
The Snug scheme
In partnership with Sheffield City Council, we have an accredited directory of private student accommodation. This scheme is called 'Snug.'
Snug is a scheme of registering, inspecting and advertising student properties in Sheffield and is intended to make sure all our students have access to good-quality, safe accommodation in the private sector. All properties accredited by Snug, go through a rigorous inspection process before they can join the scheme. That means you can rent with confidence knowing your rental has been approved by both the University and the Council.
All the private sector properties offered on our Sheffield Hallam Studentpad website are accredited by Snug.
