Rebecca is developing her skills to become a physiotherapist, whilst working at City Healthcare Partnership based in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. She is learning on the job whilst studying Sheffield Hallam’s Physiotherapy degree apprenticeship.

“The benefit of studying at Sheffield Hallam is the opportunity to go out on a 6-week placement within the first year of teaching, developing practical skills and knowledge acquired both in the workplace and university.

“I assess, treat and discharge patients within a community rehabilitation unit. As an apprentice, I am on campus for one week per month which consists of online lectures and face-to-face classroom teaching.

“I have an active role in initial assessments, treatments, and discharge planning. I use my protected study time each week to explore gaps in my learning, such as acute respiratory problems within a hospital environment. My employer has been supportive to facilitate further learning and development.

“My course leader is proactive and supports me in resolving any queries or concerns. Sheffield Hallam has accessible support sessions available at the library, focusing on topics such as academic writing, which I have found beneficial.

“The disabled student support services have supported me with my learning difficulty throughout my time here. They are easy to contact, quick to reply and have a range of options available to support my individual learning needs.

“The hands-on experience you gain through working in clinical environments alongside teaching and placements enhances the journey from apprentice to qualified Physiotherapist.

“The workload is intense, as with any degree. However, I’ve found my peers to be supportive, my course has apprentices of all ages and from a range of clinical environments around the country.

“I am keen to progress within the physiotherapy profession and specialise in a specific clinical area.

“If you are passionate about physiotherapy, I would encourage you to consider this route.”
