Management development and end of life care

Management development and end of life care

Leadership and management development

Our range of leadership and management development modules are aimed at staff from all health and social care professions, both clinical and non-clinical. We provide specialist support to Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) - a group of professionals whose leadership skills have traditionally gone unrecognised and underused.

We believe that AHPs should be a key focus for service improvement and systems innovation in health and social care; and building AHP leadership capacity is a crucial element in this. Sheffield Hallam's bespoke AHP Leadership Programme has been developed for the London CPPD portfolio. Working closely with our client organisations, we will design leadership programmes that meet specific needs - whether it is to train inexperienced AHPs or to provide strategic training to individuals already in leadership roles.

Masterclasses and action learning includes:

  • Developing a repertoire of leadership styles for different situations - diagnosis of default style, challenge and support to develop other styles
  • Navigating the internal strategic landscape - leadership skills to deliver improvements against the organisation's strategic objectives
  • Understanding the bigger picture - the system that your service and organisation is located within and how you can influence it

We utilise AHP role models in our programmes including Elaine Buckley, Chair of Health and Care Professions Council. Elaine qualified as a physiotherapist progressing to the post of Orthopaedic General Manager at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. She is also a former Assistant Dean at Sheffield Hallam University and a Non-Executive Director on the boards of a number of Trusts.

We also use our strategic and systems specialists including Dr Chris Low, Director of the Centre for Leadership, who works with the leadership teams of Trusts in deficit.

Long term conditions and end of life care

Our end of life care team comprises staff from a range of professions with expertise in oncology, radiotherapy, palliative care and bereavement. Students from different professions who have studied with us include nurses, doctors, radiographers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and chaplains.

Our MSc in Supportive and Palliative Care was developed in partnership with St. Luke's Hospice Sheffield with the aim of delivering an inter-professional course that encourages innovation and service developments to meet the needs of people with life limiting conditions. Modules from the programme are offered through the London CPPD contract, all of which are delivered via distance learning. These modules are delivered to an inter-professional cohort and explore issues including ethics and decision-making, current policy, inter-professional collaboration and the complexities of symptom management. All assessments focus on developing our students and designing service transformation.

The distance learning environment encourages peer support, networking and sharing good practice and the online activities guide the students towards the final assessment. We currently have students from across the globe studying with us, providing a rich mix of experience and opportunity for learning.

The team at Sheffield Hallam have a strong research focus; we currently have a Professor of Radiotherapy & Oncology and a number of staff with Doctorates. To date, students have completed research projects on a range of topics:

  • palliative care service improvement in many settings
  • supporting women with advanced breast cancer
  • the role of hospice neighbours in end of life care
  • educational projects
  • various projects to support staff patients and carers in palliative care
  • systematic literature reviews on a range of topics

Staff within this team also support students through proposal/ethics processes and in the completion and publication of research. Sheffield Hallam provides a rich and supportive learning experience and strives to support excellence in practice.

Our long term conditions portfolio includes the distance learning module Diabetes: Managing Complications, Improving Outcomes, which is relevant to all health professionals working with patients diagnosed with diabetes. The module presents an in-depth look at diabetes as a condition, its management, treatment options and prevention and management of complications.
