BA (Hons) Business and Management student Samuel Thompson is currently on a year-long work placement as part of his course as an NHS Finance Officer at NHS Integrated Care Board North Yorkshire. Samuel explains what his role involves and how valuable gaining work experience alongside his degree has been.

“I chose Sheffield Hallam and this course because the University has a strong reputation, particularly in business-related fields. It's known for its quality education and practical approach to learning. The University has strong connections with local and national businesses, which I thought would provide me with opportunities for internships, placements, and networking.

“I accessed dedicated support and personalised advice from the University when I was looking for placements, which helped make me more employable and prepared me for interviews. This included employability workshops, online resources, mock interviews, and career events.

“As an NHS Finance Officer, my day-to-day responsibilities involve managing budgets, generating financial reports, and analysing financial data. I oversee procurement and contracts, ensuring financial compliance, participating in financial planning, and engaging with stakeholders.

“My role is vital in ensuring the effective use of financial resources within the healthcare system to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.

“My course prepared me well for my placement, giving me a good balance of theoretical knowledge and practical skills and offering industry insights through guest lectures and company visits and also soft skills like communication and teamwork, and emphasising ethical and social responsibility.

“So far I’ve gained valuable hands-on experience and skills in financial management within the healthcare sector. This opportunity has exposed me to industry dynamics, networking opportunities, and the chance to contribute directly to healthcare delivery.

“The experience has enhanced my CV, fostered my personal growth, and opened doors to future career opportunities in finance, healthcare management, or related fields.

“I would absolutely recommend a placement to other students looking for a valuable learning experience in finance and a unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the healthcare sector whilst gaining essential skills and industry exposure.”

In addition to his year work placement Samuel has further added to his employability skills by accessing funding, support and advice from the University’s Enterprise Team to set up his own events entertainment company based in Sheffield, specialising in party accessories. Samuel continues to develop his company and was shortlisted for the 2023 Hallam Enterprise Awards.
