How you learn
This rounded course allows for rewarding individual and collaborative study alongside school placements from your first year. As well as developing an in-depth knowledge of Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and post-16 mathematics, you'll learn how to effectively impart this knowledge via teaching theory lessons and school-based experience.
You learn through:
- lessons from mathematics tutors and education specialists
- school placements from early in the course, with at least 24 weeks in total
- advanced modules preparing you for the different stages of secondary teaching
- small groups and a collaborative atmosphere
- research, practical work, presentations and written assignments
- academic tutorials
Course leaders and tutors
Starting from one day per week in your first year to longer periods in your second and third, you will work in schools to gain practical experience vital for teaching. You will be assigned a school-based mentor to help you hone your practical skills and apply your theory - helping you to work with individual students up to full classes. Sheffield Hallam has strong links to regional secondary schools to ensure your training is of the highest quality. Many of our graduates attain full time employment at their placement schools.
The majority of our graduates go directly into employment as qualified teachers, and the course's employment record currently stands at 90%. A number of key transferrable skills are also developed throughout the course allowing for alternative progression or career routes.
This course prepares you for a career in:
- academic careers as a researcher via Masters level study and PhD
- local authority/voluntary sector worker or researcher
- non-government organisation (NGO) administrative and research posts
- enrichment work with young people
- more general graduate careers including, for example, retail management and the civil service
Where will I study?
You study at City Campus through a structured mix of online lessons and face-to-face teaching with access to digital and online resources to support your learning.

This must include at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications, including at least 32 points from A level Mathematics. For example:
- BBC at A Level including a relevant subject(s).
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies.
- English Language at grade C or 4, or equivalent
- Mathematics at grade C or 4, or equivalent
Where applicants have achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in English literature only we will look for further evidence of a breadth of achievement in English.
• Access - 60 credits with at least 45 at level 3 (the rest at level 2) from a relevant Open College Network accredited course. At least 18 level 3 credits should be in mathematics at merit or distinction level. It will support your application to be studying mathematics to at least AS level.
• Foundation year - successfully completing our Extended Degree in Engineering and Mathematics or equivalent in addition to holding an A Level in Mathematics.
Prior to your application we highly recommend that you have some experience observing and/or supporting mathematics lessons for Key Stage 3 and 4 in a non-selective state secondary school to gain an insight into contemporary approaches to teaching mathematics in the UK. This will greatly increase your chances of reaching the interview stage for entry to this course.
Candidates who are successful will demonstrate a sound understanding of teaching and how children learn, where possible within a school setting. We encourage all candidates to evidence their understanding by drawing on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings. Demonstrating an ability to make links between experience and knowledge, and their proposed career would be desirable.
Meeting the qualifications on the entry criteria does not guarantee you either an interview or a place on the course. You should ensure that you submit a personal statement and reference as these are considered as part of the selection process. Guidelines on personal statements and references can be found on the UCAS website.
In your personal statement you should clearly state the extent of any experience you have obtained observing or supporting in a secondary mathematics classroom. You should also include any other experiences of working with young people, such working as a sports coach or with a youth group.
If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to a selection event and you should present a passport or photo driving license. You can present other forms of photo ID for the selection event, but if you do, you will still need to present valid identity documents required by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) prior to starting your course.
We consider other qualifications from the UCAS tariff. Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience are also considered. We welcome applications from people of any age.
If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills or equivalent. For equivalents see our English language entry requirements
As you will work with children, you must complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms.
If you already have an undergraduate degree you are not eligible to apply for this course.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2021/22 is £9,250 per year.
