BALEAP Conference Successes

Tuesday 25 April 2017

Karen Nicholls (Sheffield Hallam University, TESOL Centre) and Sarah Procter (Sheffield Institute of Education, Early Years) gave a presentation on their joint research. Their project looked at how the development of academic language can be fostered with work-based, part-time home students whose first language is not academic.

The British Association of Lecturers in EAP has traditionally focused on International students. However, the expertise of EAP practitioners is increasingly being used in work with home students.

The presentation is a good example of the type of collaborative work that the TESOL centre is carrying out in language policy and educational linguistics.

Karen say "It’s great to have the opportunity to work closely with a colleague to explore an area of practice that we are both passionate about, enabling students to perform at their full potential. We started looking at the language of feedback that students received, but we can see that there are more areas in which we can collaborate. We’re already planning our next steps.

The BALEAP Conference is held every two years and is supplemented with three professional development events each year. More details are here.
