Linguistic Knowledge about Language Education - Approaches to teaching grammar and knowledge about language

Wednesday 24 May 2017

Nick Moore presented during the annual meeting of the ‘Linguistic Knowledge about Language Education’ Special Interest Group of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL), held at the University of Sheffield.

Nick joined Dr. Lise Fontaine of the University of Cardiff to present a talk entitled “An SFL approach to grammar and knowledge about language”.

The talk was one of a series that examined how different perspectives on language help students at all levels of the education system to use language to help them express themselves more clearly across different subjects.

Nick Moore’s section of the talk summarised the success of different projects around the world that have used Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as the linguistic model for helping students understand the role of language in school subjects.

He also highlighted the lessons that have been learned by the various projects.

Lise Fontaine pointed out how different aspects of SFL theory could be combined with other linguistic models in order to increase the advantages to teachers and students.

The meeting ended with various practical proposals to increase the profile of the SiG and to connect with key groups.
