I suppose I was lucky, as I moved up to Sheffield to study in 1977 - just as punk was starting. There were lots of gigs going on and looking back at my diaries from the time, I’m not sure how I got any work done as I seemed to be out every night watching bands at the Poly or Top Rank. Within a few weeks of being in Sheffield I saw Cabaret Voltaire, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshee, The Jam, Motorhead, Elvis Costello, The Damned and others I can’t remember.

In first year I lived up at Ballard Hall up in Ranmoor. We would get the bus into the city centre which went past the Hallamshire Hospital. Everyday this bloke used to get on with a lopsided haircut. A lot of the girls used to have a bit of a crush on him, thought he was quite trendy, and of course it was Phil Oakey who worked as a hospital porter at the time.

A friend of mine invited me to see this new electronic band called The Human League play at Psalter Lane. We went along and when they got on stage we all recognised him as that bloke from the bus.
