Course summary

You’ll study a course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). We’ll introduce you to environmental experts and you’ll have the chance to work on live projects for real clients. You’ll tailor your studies to your own career goals, specialising in ecology & conservation or international resource management.

How you learn
Your lecturer’s view
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
We provide a supportive, inclusive and challenging learning experience – helping you develop as a self-directed learner with a long-lasting passion for environmental management. You’ll be introduced to key theories and current debates through lectures from leading authorities. You’ll experience site visits to explore key concepts and issues. Instead of exams you’ll be assessed on the application of skills and knowledge – evidenced through your coursework.
You’ll also engage in formative exercises, group discussions and critical analyses of current environmental issues and case studies.

Applied learning
Live projects
You’ll complete a major independent research project, which you’ll design on a subject of your choice under the expert supervision of an academic. Projects are often aligned with current research activities undertaken by our staff – in collaboration with a wide range of partners, including local government, the Environment Agency, industry and conservation organisations.
You may also be able to work in a small group to complete a live consultancy project for one of our partner organisations – who act as a real-life client for your work.
Field trips
We use our university campus, Sheffield city centre, the surrounding region and the neighbouring Peak District National Park as live study sites on many of our modules. In these locations you’ll see examples of the principles and practice techniques covered on the course.
Recent visits have included habitat management in the Peak District and lowland peat bogs, ecological survey in local farmland, sustainable housing design, and innovative waste management practices in Sheffield. Where possible these visits involve the external professionals responsible for the site or the process in question.

You’ll benefit from our extensive network of leading experts and organisations. We’ll encourage you to engage with our contacts, both on the course and through extra-curricular activities. By working with them you can explore the different roles within the environmental sector.

Environmental management offers a wide range of exciting employment opportunities. Our applied focus on professional skills and competencies encourages you to develop a personal career development plan – supported by our specialist Employability Advisers.
Many of our graduates go on to work in the consultancy sector – which spans both ecology and resource management.

Equipment and facilities
On this course you have access to
- sites in the Sheffield area and Peak District, allowing you to explore environmental management issues
- specialist computer services, including labs with access to Geographical Information Systems (ArcGIS), as well as remote access to ArcGIS and other specialist software via a virtual desktop
- well-equipped labs for environmental science, hydrology and materials testing
- a wide range of specialist field equipment, which is available to use in your major research project
Entry requirements
All students
Normal entry requirements are a minimum 2.2 honours degree or equivalent. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more
We may accept applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements depending on their suitability. This may be assessed by • an interview and/or piece of written work • relevant experience • qualifications • commitment to study.
International students
International qualifications are suitable if they are equivalent to a UK 2.2 honours degree.
If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time study in 2024/25 is £10,310 for the course. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. If the full course is more than one year in duration, the fee will be divided into annual payments which will then be rounded. This may mean the total fee you pay is slightly higher than the fee stated above. If you take a break in study or have to re-take part of the course, you may also be charged an additional fee and will be notified of this at the time.
If you are studying an undergraduate course, postgraduate pre-registration course or postgraduate research course over more than one academic year then your tuition fees may increase in subsequent years in line with Government regulations or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) published fees.
